New Years Day Two Bridges, Bideford, 01/01/2004

2004 dawned with a rather windy but thankfully dry morning for the first race of the year. Andrew Ingle got away

from the rest of the field early and the further he ran, the further he won by with an eventual margin of 37 seconds

to the second place Peter Hockin. Kirsty Hamilton clocked the fastest ladies time, marginally quicker than Elizabeth

Higgins, and amongst the juniors running the two mile course, Dan Mapp led from the off and held off the challenges

of Craig Bellew and Adam Glover. When the team prizes had been worked out, team E emerged victorious, so

congratulations go the three Okes - Ben, Jessica and Andy together with Simon Lacey

Devon Cross Country Championships, Exeter, 04/01/2004

The "Bronze runner" is back home! For the ninth time in the last ten runnings, our senior men’s squad emerged victorious

from the Devon Cross Country Championships. To go with their overall win, we picked up three more gold medals, the

veteran men’s team, the under 13 Girls team, and individually Kay Eastwood in the ladies O/55 category. Jon Ward ran

an excellent race to finish second and head the senior men’s team to their triumph, while also in that race Peter Hockin

took 2nd O/40, Bill O’Donnell 3rd O/40 and Andy Jewell 3rd O/45. Helen Parkinson had earlier finished third senior lady (and

led our three lady squad to second team), and the U/17 boys team were a close second to a strong North Devon AC team.
Team results - U/13 Girls - 1st, U/13 Boys - 4th, U/15 Boys - 4th, Sen. Men - 1st, Sen. Ladies - 2nd, Vet Men 1st,.Other

age group teams were incomplete.

Westward League Cross Country, Bideford, 11/01/2004

A cold, crisp setting for our "home" Westward League event - with times on the whole being quicker than last year.

Andrew Ingle led the men's team to another handsome win, matched by the Under 13 Boys, whole the U/17 boys

had to settle for second and third this time around, beaten by a strong Cornwall AC trio.

Devon Schools Cross Country, Exeter, 17/01/2004

Our juniors will soon be getting bored with this course as this was the third visit in a couple of months (Westward

League and Devon Champs being the others), with the SW Schools still to come. Our runners contributed to North

Devon taking five of the eight team trophies on offer. Jack, Erica, Carl, Reece, John, Ben and Jamie have been

selected to run for Devon in the SW Schools event in February.

Reebok Cross Country Series, Cardiff, 18/01/2004

Just like last year Kevin Heywood crossed the Severn to race in Cardiff, and after recovering from an injury was

pleased to finish 21st (29:02)

South of England Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill, 25/01/2004

After a mix-up regarding entry dates, we only had senior men representing the club at Parliament Hill. Jon had a

great start, being in the lead pack early on, but as the race went on Kevin closed on him only for time to run out

and Jon just held him off to be first Blues home. The men's team closed out in 16th overall, of over 100 teams.

Norwich Union S W SportsHall Championships, Torbay, 31/01/2004

Ben Pomeroy was selected to compete for Devon after some excellent performances in the SportsHall league earlier in

the winter. He didn't let the side down, with an excellent runner-up spot in the 4 Lap race. He also performed creditable

in the Standing Triple Jump and the Relay as Devon finished third overall.

Braunton 10, Braunton, 01/02/2004

Peter Hockin had a gun to tape victory as he ran away from the rest of the 207 competitors assembled in Braunton.

Bill O'Donnell took second place after a race-long battle with a South Devon athlete, and among the others who had

good performances were Steve Davies, Stuart Wilson, Annette Murray and Jo Bedler. The men took first team, while

the ladies were second.

Nice to see the Exmouth 5-miler back on the fixture list, even nicer to see BAAC in the results against 3 of the top

4 places! Jon just got the better of Kevin, with Andrew less than a minute back and Chris rounding out the victorious

men's team in 25th cruelly denied a 30:00 clocking by a single second. Five places further back, welcome to

ex-Exmouth runner Mike Mears. Overall, 205 finished.

Kevin Heywood and Jon Ward have been having close encounters with each other all winter, and the Inter-Counties

at Nottingham proved to be another of those, with Kevin just coming out on top. Elsewhere, it was nice to see three

Spidernet Pafos Half Marathon / 10K, 07/03/2004

A large party of Blues travelled to Cyprus, ostensibly to compete in the Pafos road races, but mainly to have a

decent holiday! As far as the running goes, it was a very successful day, with Peter Hockin leading the way by

winning the 10K event, with blue vests packed in behind giving us 6 of the top 12 places. Over the 13.1 mile

distance, Alec led out of the start area, eventually finishing 8th with Tony also picking up an age group trophy.

As for the holiday, an excellent time was had by all - thanks to Alan for organising the trip, and to Steve

Sanders for organising a "Superstars" type event over the first three days, won by Roger.

Bideford Half Marathon, 07/03/2004

Our biggest race goes from strength-to-strength, again boasting a record number of both entrants (672) and

finishers (608). The men's race was taken by Dave Tomlin of Teignbridge Trotters, with ex-Blues Zelah Morrall

running to a victory in the ladies race. Elizabeth Higgins was our only age-group winner, taking her category for

the third successive year. We again acknowledge the support from our sponsors, R T Marke & Co., Chartered

Accounts, Devonshire Pine Ltd, and Tarka Springs. The race was also part of the Foxriver Devon Road Race series.

Devon Sportshall Fixture 5, Dawlish, 07/03/2004

While the quantity of young athletes competing for us indoors this winter has been disappointing, the same certainly

cannot be said about the quality of the performances. Matthew Cawsey and Ben Pomeroy both picked up overall

medals in five of their six combined events. Ben won the Hurdles, and came second in the 4 laps and Standing Triple

Jump, while Matthew picked up bronzes in both the standing jumps.

Elizabeth took yet another age group win, by no less than 12 minutes (incdentally, she ran exactly the same

time as last year). Stuart's run also was worthy of note, as he crept under the hour barrier, while Jamie's time,

although he is now 17, set an inaugural club record for someone still in the U/17 age group.

Good Friday Relays, Bideford, 09/04/2004

Over a hundred runners lined up in warm conditions that matched last year's fine weather. Twenty-one teams of five were made by the usual combination of seeding and random draw, no one team immediately jumping out as the favourite, doutbless a number of those in some teams fancied their chances. The building work to the side of Victoria Park meant a slight detour, so individual times would be a few seconds slower than in previous years. The format turned out to be (with a few adjustments for personal circumstances) - slower man (2 laps), junior (1 lap), lady (2 laps), older junior (2 laps) and faster man (2 lap)

Refugee from North Devon AC, Kirsty Hamilton, fresh from representing England Schools cross-country six days earlier took an immediate lead, and it was to prove a lead team "O" were never to relinquish. With a 16 second lead after the first lap, she increased this to 19" on the second circuit leading home Neil Paddon for "M" and then Steve Clements leading a closely grouped field.

On to the second leg, with Lisa Massimo taking over in the lead the juniors over one lap and she ran a well-paced leg to keep pole position. Behind her, team "U" had been lifted into second after Kelly Pearce passed five others with "A" climbing even faster thanks to Joe Kelly taking them from 15th to 3rd. Joe's time was the fastest boy, while Kelly's time was only matched by another North Devon refugee, Leanne Glover.

Ladies on the third leg, Kerry Hayden taking over in first place, and with her running the fastest of the twenty-one runners on that leg her team's position was consolidated. Not much change in the positions behind, except that "A" had passed "U" thanks to the efforts of Amanda Hetherington, while Tracey Wilson and Carol Davies picked up a couple of positions in the midfield.

The older juniors then took centre stage, led away by James Bolton. His time of 12:40 was sufficient to draw away from the chasers - a lead of 20 seconds when he took over was transformed into one of 1m40s at the end. Lapped runners made working out the positions confusing, but Maria Clements had held second for "A", barely ahead of Adam Glover who had a fine leg for "P" and Craig Bellew for "T" whose 11:45 was only challenged by Dan Mapp's 11:47 and Shaun Wilson's 11:50

On to the final leg, with the fast men with Stuart Philps being given an unassailable lead ahead of Mark Davies. Third and fourth placed Bill O'Donnell and Mike Mears both made up ground, and passed Mark, but were unable to make any significant impression on Stuart as team "O" romped home a minute clear. Peter Hockin again had the fastest time, his 9:42 being clearly quicker than everyone else.

Flora London Marathon, London, 18/04/2004

Better weather for running than watching the 23rd Flora London Marathon, with spells of light drizzle. Mixed

emotions for our runners - with most of the more experienced marathoners ending up slightly disappointed,

while the bulk of the first-timers had excellent runs and were justifiably delighted.

Great West Run, Exeter, 02/05/2004

A superb effort from John Ward as he led the field a merry dance in beating the huge field by over 2 minutes.

Three places behind was Jon Parkinson, whose wife Helen was also fourth of her sex.

Only Luke Rigler ran for the club in the Bank Holiday Monday track meeting of paced middle-distance races. He ran in the 'I' string 800m, finishing 9th in 2:20.09. This is likely to be Luke's last run in BAAC colours for now, as he has put in his resignation and joined North Devon AC

Round The Tree Races, Torrington, 02/05/2003

A host of Blues left Torrington clutching medals and prizes, with Bill retaining the men's race in exactly the same time as last year!

First BAAC Handicap, Bideford, 12/05/2004

And to think we were elated with a turnout of 93 for the first of last year's handicap series ! No fewer than 104 entrants lined up outside the club for this year's first of the six races over the tried and tested course. Unfortunately we had a couple of hiccoughs with two of the juniors going on to the long course instead of turning back , but well done to Adam for finishing and to Rebecca who got to halfway before it was realised that things had gone wrong. As ever, the first race involves a lot of guesswork in the setting of the handicaps, but hopefully that will be sorted out for the second event.

The times below are the handicapped times - take the starting handicap shown in the third column off to arrive at the runner's actual time.
