Blackdown
Beast - Sunday 29th January 2012 - Liz Warner, Mary Pool & Sue
Pennington
A
little over 16 miles of mud, self navigation, mulled cider, pasties and
more mud. sounded like fun... And on the day, it was. Sludging through
boggy marshlands, through farmyards, across fields, stiles and gates made
for a great way to spend a few hours. fastest time was just under 3 hours,
slowest was 5.5 ( we did 3:20) but the point was never to race or
bag a PB. The checkpoints at the 3 pubs put paid to that. The mulled cider
at 7 miles softened the blow of the tough terrain but the pasty
would have been a risky gamble that Sue and I passed on. Except Mary who
bravely polished off her pasty in record time!
So
if you are up for a challenging off road social run (not a race) with not
a marshall in sight ( only white drawing pins strategically placed on gate
posts) leave your best running shoes at home and enter in the spirit
the run is intended for.... You'll be glad you did.

A
great turn out from the Blues with the Blues ladies (Kathryn Guard,

impressive 15th in 1:03:03. Good runs too for Candice Jewell, David

Bye
bye to Lorna and Denise
At the
sports hall session on 15/12/11 the children, coaches and helpers bid
a fond farewell to Denise and Lorna by presenting them with flowers and chocolates.
Lorna
has used skills to coach the children for over a year as a valued
member of the coaching team.

| Everyone wishes to thank them both for
devoting their time and passion to the club and wish them the very best
for the future. |

New
Years Day Two Bridges
2012
began on a good note with an excellent turn out for the Annual Two Bridges
Club Race. 49 hardy competitors sped around the 4 mile...ish course in
unseasonal mild and dry conditions with a team of keen marshals and
helpers supporting them. First home was Kevin Heywood in 19.11, closely
followed by Mark Jenkin (20.21) and Andrew Ingle (21.33). Zo Gardner also
put in an excellent time (28.54) to finish in the top ten. RESULTS HERE

| The Annual Christmas lights run
proved a great success again this year - we even got to meet Santa on his
Sleigh. The weather stayed dry (mostly) and everyone was greeted by hot

Christmas
Cracker - Weston-Super_Mare - 11th December 2012
Despite
the forecast of heavy rain, a coach full of enthusiastic Blues arrived at
a dry and calm Weston-Super-Mare in time for the 2011 Christmas Cracker.
Within 30 minutes of our arriving, the town was awash with fancy dress -
Snowmen, Santas and Sexy Elves prepared to take part in one of the
Southwest's most popular themed 10K's. Mike (the Grim Reaper) Gilmore was
in the prizes again this year, taking third place in the fancy dress
competition but sadly there was no room at the Inn for our own Nativity
ladies who came up against stiff competition.
The
first 5K of this race takes place on the beach and again the gods were
kind - the sand was firm and the going was good. In fact conditions were
so good that our own Kevin Heywood took full advantage, winning the race
in 31 minutes and 31 seconds - a new course record!
As
a warm down we climbed to the top of the College building to join the
queue for baggage, four floors below (something went wrong there) and
several hot showers later (yes hot) we retired to the new Wetherspoons
(Cabot Court Hotel) for refreshments.
Our
friendly coach driver collected us at 5.15pm for the long journey home,
during which we were treated to Al's special raffle where everyone was a
winner, except Paul Sturtidge who managed to give away the entire contents
of a bottle of Glenmorangie (for which many of us were very grateful...
hic)
Once
again, Heardy did a magnificent job with the organising and I'm sure that
in twelve months time another coach full of Blues will be trundling up the
M5 again. Full results of this year's race HERE
and our own photos of Blues participants can be viewed HERE |

New
York Marathon 2011
Mark
Jenkin and Gary Suggate did us proud in this year's New York Marathon.
Mark finished 97th out of 47,000 in a time of 2:36:57. Gary completed the
course in 3:01:12 but the New York is known to be a tough marathon and
both runners have run quicker in other marathons.

Two
wins out of two for Kevin Keywood and good times from John Ward, Andrew
Ingle, Chris Sellens and Chris Stone keep Bideford AAC in second place in

SIX STAGE ROAD RELAYS - BIRMINGHAM - SUNDAY 16TH OCTOBER 2011 Kevin
Heywood, Steve Gallienne, Mark Jenkin, Chris Sellens, Andrew Ingle and

race in a combined time of 1:54:51, finishing 41st among 76 teams in the
senior men's race. The impressive result was a dramatic improvement on
last year when the Blues finished 58th. |

Tavy
7 - Sunday 23rd October 2011
Five
Blues ventured over the moors to take part in this years 'Tavy 7'. The
event was once again excellently organised although a strong breeze made
sure that there wasn't a changing or registration tent to be seen - the
race officials had to rely on stone paperweights to keep down the piles of
race numbers which were individually issued on the day. A new seven mile
course which managed to steer clear of most of the abundant Dartmoor
gradients culminated at the start where a 100 metre downhill dash made for
a fast finish.
Blues
results were - Jimmy Murray - 46:26 (16th), Robbie Murray - 55:35, Paul
Sturtridge - 56:33, Patricia Martin - 1:05:33 (PB), Doug Jenkin - 1:05:33 |

BIDEFORD
10 MILER - Sunday 9th October 2011
Damp
and breezy weather conditions greeted runners for this year's Bideford 10
Miler. 173 competitors took part and the race attracted entries
from across the country. Once again the event was very well supported by
our neighbouring running clubs who picked up some prizes too. First home
was Bideford's own Steve Gallienne who completed the course in an
impressive 53:51.
Second place went to David Cutler of South Moulton Strugglers (58:56) and
third to John Shapland of North Devon Road Runners (59:23). Serane Burd of
Tiverton Harriers was first lady home in 1:07:20.
Top
team prizes were shared between Bideford AAC (Senior Men & Vets) and
Okehampton Running Club (Ladies & Ladies Vets).

Men's
Health Survival of the Fittest - Sunday 2nd October
Liz
Warner and Rachel Williams took part in this crazy event in Cardiff. Liz
reports as follows:
Temporary
insanity made us enter the Men's Health survival of the fittest in Cardiff
but the fantastic experience we had will make us sign up again without
hesitation.
A
10k run (they lied, we passed the 10k marker way before we finished), was
interspersed with obstacles after every 1k. First the giant hay stacks to
climb over, then a slanting wall being hosed with baby oil got the
adrenaline kicking in followed by a scaffolding ladder and a couple of
land rovers to go over/under/ through. A bit of slalom sprinting and a
wade through the murky river Taff and a slippery climb up the bank. A bit
of a breather running to the next obstacle of an army assault course-
carrying sandbags over our shoulders and on to the scramble nets, monkey
bars, tyres, rope ladders, you get the idea. Next stop, the Millennium
stadium, no music to be heard as we charged up to the top level, along the
inside of the arena and back down again. Now a bit of light relief -
inflatables! saw one guy hobbling away after a little too much childish
play. Back
through the river, and feeling like we were almost home and dry ( well not
dry, I fell in the river) only to find we had to hurdle the barriers, grab
a traffic cone and navigate our way through tyres and back over the
barriers. |
|
Finally the end in a sight.... The 8 foot Wall of Fame and an
outstanding cheer of encouragement from the spectators. Up onto the wall
and VICTORY!! It's
gotta be done. |

Bideford
Blues HASH - 18th August 2011
The
first Bideford Blues Hash proved to be a great success with a pack of 21
runners searching out a trail, laid on the ground in in flour (not
flowers, Pam) which led them through the woods towards Appledore shipyard.
Numerous 'falsies' (false trails) kept the FRB (fast running bastards)
busy whilst the 'Knitting Circle' (runners doing more chatting than
running) caught up. Snooty cries of 'On-On' from our chairman and 'Hash
Master', Anthony kept the pack on the right course which ended up in the
Bar at the Blues (surprise, surprise). Numerous 'down-downs' followed as
fines for such indiscretions as wearing red shirts (shock, horror) and
showering too quickly (Mark) were dished out by 'Religious Advisor'
Anthony (busy lad, wasn't he). Mention
of a Christmas Hash was also made ... On-On! |

Friday Relays - Friday 23rd April 2011
The
children's run in the park took place again this year with budding
athletes up to the age of eight sprinting around the park paths. Nine
teams then fiercely competed in the relay race which was won by Mark
Jenkin with a little help from Alan Heard, Scott Braunton, Zo Gardner (left)
and Molly Pennington (right). Tracey Wilson and Karen Curry organised the
event brilliantly and with generous contributions of food from club
members, Gill, Judith, Tracey and Ann served up a feast for all following

Grizzly
- Sunday 13th March 2011 - Report from Andrew Pearson
Just
a quick mail to let you know I completed the Grizzly on Sunday a 20
mile + race around Seaton and Beer, full of bogs, hills, trails
and cliffs and then more bogs, hills, trails and cliffs. North Devon
marathon aside it's probably the hardest race I have ever done hence the
time of 3:19:58 which is a couple of mins over my pb marathon time
but 6 miles shorter!!! It was called valley of the bogs this year and it
really lived up to it's name!! all runners were covered in mud and hosed
down by the firebrigade at the end. I managed to come in 155th of 1675
finishers. I would definitely do this race again it was really well
organised with a carnival feel to it. This report is only a small glimpse
of what was a fantastic day (The weather was brilliant to!!) |

Race
Report This
year's 'swift half' is sure to lead to a few pints for several of the
Bideford AAC organisers, marshalls, helpers and runners... and several
more for race director Alan Heard. With an entry list of 1200 runners 'Heardy'
knew the Blues would be in for a busy day but the dry, cool and still
conditions which greeted the competitors were better than he would have
dared to predict. The
new combined race number & chip seemed to work very well and everyone
ran the right way again this year (don't ask - it's history). Pipes
and Drums, buskers and Bideford Tarka Morris brought a carnival
atmosphere to the event and for those runners needing a little TLC after
the race (myself included) the Bideford Wellbeing Centre generously
offered free leg massages. There was no shortage of home baked cakes and
savouries from our clubhouse kitchen whilst the club bar was able to offer
a couple of guest ales from Countrylife Brewery (it's important to replace
the fluid, you know). Now
in it's 17th Year, the Bideford Half Marathon is an event which, thanks to
the support of our sponsors, local businesses and the members of Bideford
AAC, is a 'swift half' with a very pleasant aftertaste. |

ice covered the knee deep water at the start of this tough ten miler.
Twelve Blues took part and some have the bruises to prove it. First Blue
home was Jack Oliver in a time of 1:17:09 (2nd SM), who finished in fifth
place. Other finishers were Steve Sanders (1:25:32 - 1st o/50), Mary Pool

South
of England Cross Country Championships - Saturday 29th January 2011
Kevin
Heywood finished an incredible 8th after being left behind when the
starting gun went off prematurely. He and hundreds of other runners were
still queuing and found themselves at the back of the 900 strong field.
Bideford finished in a highly creditable 18th place out of 93 teams thanks
also to very good performances from Steve Gallienne and Mark Jenkin. |

Braunton
10 - Sunday 23rd January 2011
Excellent
turn out from Blues runners and Kevin Heywood won with a new course
record! Weather typically Braunton - cold and sunny.
Hills still there and big!
Rumours were going round that the
race was nearly cancelled due to severe ice on some of the hills. The ice
was still there in places but was nowhere near as bad as the day before
and the marshals did an excellent job of letting us know where the
worst parts were. The weather was kind to all the runners.
They were treated to a bright, sunny but not too cold morning
which provided excellent race conditions (If you exclude the very patchy
ice) that Kevin Heywood made the most of, setting a new course record and
scooping first place overall. Kevin wasn't the only one to come away with
a dust gatherer (only joking I'd love one!!!). Martin Colwill and Alec
Mclaren came first in their age categories. Gary Suggate earned himself a
new PB and the Bideford men, Kev Heywood, Martin Colwill, Gary Suggate and
Chris Stone one the 2nd place men's team prize. Apparently the
presentation room might have been a little whiffy due to the poor
showering and changing facilities provided at the North Devon track -
there were two showers, one of them broken and the other one was a mere
trickle so most people decided not to bother. Also half the changing room
was full up with high jump mats! Enough moaning now. Other than that
it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish.
Results: Kev Heywood 1st 51:47 (course record), Martin Colwill 8th
1:02:28 (1st vet 40), Gary suggate 13th 1:04:04 (PB), Chris Stone
18th 1:04:46, Stuart Philps 36th 1:08:32, Andy Pearson 40th 1:10:06,
Barrie Huxtable 43rd 1:10:39, Neil Marke 44th 1:10:41, Alec Mclaren 52nd
1:11:44 (1st male 50), Mark Gilbert 62nd 1:13:25, Paul Sturtridge
67th 1:14:16, Steve Saunders 88th 1:17:19, Sue Pennington 137th 1:23:32,
?? Marsh 151st 1:25:56, Mary Pool 172nd 1:28:19, Carol Davis 173rd
1:28:30, Mark Palmer 189th 1:32:20, Kathryn Guard 190th 1:32:21, Liz
Warner 191st 1:32:22, Lorrie Woolgar 193rd 1:32:57, Kay Eastwood 232nd 1:53:14.

Western
League Cross Country - Bideford - Sunday 16th January
WET
& MUDDY... and a success! These are the words to describe this years
cross country event in Bideford. Karen,
Lorrie & Kay deserve a special mention for braving the conditions to
set out the course, along with the gang of marshals, without whom the
races could not have taken place ... and gang-master Liz too. Special
thanks also to the kind lady who offered to assist in the kitchen and
nearly bit off more than she could chew (sorry I don't know your name but
we promise to get you some more help next time). |

New
Years Day 2 Bridges - 2011
A
mild dry morning greeted blues members for their annual 2 Bridges Race.
There were some differences of opinion regarding the race distance
(varying between 3.84 and 4 miles) - I suspect that the quantity of
alcohol still in some runners blood after the night before may have caused
them to take a less direct route but it has to be said that Alan Cox and
his measuring wheel rarely lie. First Junior home on the day was Dani
Jewell in 14:07 with Bobby Talbot-Adams in second and Zoe Gardner third.
Winner of the adult race was Gary Suggate in an impressive 23:49, closely
followed by Bill O'Donnell (24:50) and Stuart Philps (25:14). The winning
team comprised Bill O'Donnell, Colin Pennington, David Alford and Dani
Jewell. Everyone won a prize and an excellent buffet rounded off the
morning. Special thanks to all helpers and marshals for getting up early
to make the day a success. Full Results HERE. Photos HERE |

Christmas
Lights Club Run - 16th December 2010
25 Blues of all ages wandered the
streets of Bideford wearing festive hats during their club run on
Thursday. They were in search of the street with the best Christmas
lights. Although lights were a little harder to find than in previous
years, some fine examples were found in Lime Grove, College Green and
Meadow Park. A good time was had by all! |

Christmas
Cracker - Sunday 5th December
The
annual club excursion to Wyvern set off as usual just after 8am on a very
cold and frosty morning. The atmosphere on the coach could only be
described as somewhat subdued compared to what was to come in a few hours.
Race wise the 34 runners that took part for the blues had to endure soft
slightly sinking sand under the pier at the start and in some places
several skating rinks as the race continued inland. Jimmy Murray was first
home for the blues with yet another pb. After the race was
over the yearly trip to a Weston-super-mare Public house was inevitable
and everyone spent the afternoon having more than a few sociable
halves. Before we knew it it was time to get back on the coach with
the earlier subdued mood changing noticeably after more than a few
drinks each. Heardy as usual did a superb job with the raffle and the
presents and to sum it up I'm sure everybody that went would agree that a
great day was had by all. It's also worth mentioning Kay and
Liz won the fancy dress runners up prize dressed as Mary Poppins and the
chimney sweep.
Thanks Heardy for a great day!!! (thanks to Andrew Pearson for the race
report). Full race results HERE. |

Club
Run - Thursday 11th November 2010 from the clubhouse
Despite
howling winds and the threat of downpours, around 25 club runners braved
the elements for our first 'we wana be tugever' club run. Recognising that
some of our lighter junior runners would probably have ended up taking off
if we had run the 'Two Bridges' a more sheltered (I don't think so) route
around town was selected. Despite some imaginative variations to the
proposed route we all ended up back where we started ... and it didn't
rain! Next club run is scheduled for 6pm on the 16th December and will be
a Christmas light spotting special ... we're anticipating snow! |

Andy
and Liz Warner travelled to Bonnie Scotland for this popular event. Andy
ran the marathon in 3:46:41 whilst Liz ran the more modest 10K in 52:09 (pb).
Liz tells me that neither of them saw the Lock Ness monster despite
drinking a few wee drams! |

of 60p so he thought he should have more than one ... hic :) |

riverbanks, ploughed fields etc etc! with 2 mega hills at 19m and 25m.

visit on their land! Jimmy had got himself into 3rd but lost it when he
finally found his way back, ending up in 4th overall, but 1st V40. Lorrie
also got lost on route and did 27m but still got a V45 2nd place trophy

Blues took part in the first ever North Devon marathon at Woolacombe on
Sunday 27th June and one of them won! In baking hot conditions eased only

Yeo
Mill Yomp, Exmoor - Sunday 20th June
Martin
Colwill took first place to retain his crown in a time of 1:11:05 at this
10.25 mile event which Martin reckons is a little tougher than the Doone.
Steve Heard came home in eighth place in 1:17:21 - Both good times
particular taking into account the sunny, hot conditions. Martin is keen
for more Blues to take part next year ... except Peter Hockin ;) |

Ruby
Run - Sunday 13th June 2010
A
good turn out from the Blues and a one-two for Peter Hockin and Martin
Colwill on a warm summers morning. Peter came home first in 1:16:00 to win
his fourth Ruby Run, over 3 minutes in front of Martin who was clearly not
trying hard enough ;) Amongst the other notable performances was a sixth
place for Chris Stone and a battle between Paul Sturtridge, Sue Pennington
and Jo Bedlar which Jo and Sue won using a pincers movement to come in two
abreast (Jo was slightly in front of Sue) beating Paul by 4 seconds. Jimmy Murray managed 11th, Stuart Philps 16th, Andy Warner 24th
and Andy Glover 40th. |

raise over £2,300 online with a further £1,000 or two in the collecting
tins which he rattled along the way.

Cubert
5 Miler - Tuesday 8th June 2010
Martin
Colwill travelled to Cubert near Newquay and may have been the only North
Devon runner if not the only Devon runner amongst 550 Cornish finishers. A
nice evening, bbq and a unique Camping chair for every runner - different
!! Martin was pleased to come back with a 5 mile pb of 28 mins 22 secs. |

Dartmoor
Discovery - Sunday 6th June 2010
Jimmy
Murray finished this 32.2 mile toughie in 4:33:35, finishing in 13th place
and 13 minutes faster than his previous time for the event. This is
probably due to the fact that Jimmy has been abducted by aliens and
replaced by a look-a-like, half his original size ... or it may be due to
some pretty serious dieting! |

Clovelly
Crawler - 1st May 2010
This
years grueling coastal club challenge took place in near perfect
conditions with threatened rain staying away. Mike Gilmore, Alan Heard,
Steve Sanders, Alan Cox, Rob Floyd, Charlie Davis, Andy Pearson, Bill
Siviter, Stuart Philps, Ian Clewes and Sue Pennington completed the full
course to the Blues clubhouse whilst Kathryn Guard and Doug Jenkin took
the less painful option, running from Bucks Mills. Andy Watts, Kay
Dickinson and Doug & Brenda Birchell took the Peppercombe route back
to the Blues. First back was Stuart Philps who managed to run the complete
course - an exceptional achievement as anyone who has ventured onto the
coast path will know. Kathryn (Princess Fiona) Guard was first into the
mens showers at the end of the race, closely followed by the men ... but
not before she had showered and dressed (those Blues men are such
gentlemen). Special thanks to Janet Glover and Dee Jenkin for doing the
driving bit and Barrie and Heardy for opening the bar at the end ... it
was like scene out of Ice Cold in Alex! |

Half Marathon - Sunday 7th March 2010
Mark
Jenkin was a worthy winner of the 16th Bideford Half Marathon, finishing
the race in 1:10:59. Near perfect conditions greeted runners from as far
afield as Freiburg in Germany and Atlanta in America whilst a dozen
intrepid Irishmen (and women) journeyed from Lagan Valley, Belfast for the
event.
Pipes
and Drums, Samba bands and Morris Dancers entertained the crowds along the
route and England goal keeper David James was spotted amongst the crowds
of enthusiastic supporters (at 6'8" you couldn't really miss him). |

our largest entry was from the Womens Running Network (57 runners) with
Teignbridge Trotters (right) in second place (31 runners). Teignbridge
kindly provided two pace men for the event and the 1:45 man came home in
1:44:40... impressive.
Bideford
AAC fielded 50 runners and still managed to fully marshal the course, man
the drinks stations, run the canteen, baggage lorry and start/finish. The
work of our volunteers before during and after the event is much
appreciated.

The

28.37, as did James McLaren 29.36, Maurice Cockwill 35.35, Alan Heard
37.14, Mike Gilmore 40.59 and Glen Martin 41.04 (apparently the timekeeper
had a bit of trouble with his timing watch at the start). |

5K, 1/2 Marathon & Marathon - 8th, 9th & 10th January
A
Murray mix competed in a variety of races at Disney World with Jim running
both the Half Marathon (1:38:30) and Marathon (3:26:57) on consecutive
days. Children Rob & Leonie competed in the 5K, finishing in 32min and
34 minutes (can't believe that Rob didn't wait for his li'l Sis ;)).
Jim
tells us that the Marathon starts at 5.40 in the morning to avoid the heat
of the sun. Unfortunately freak weather conditions meant that it was so
cold that spilt water at the drinks stations was freezing on the ground!
It's also the first marathon that Jim has finished when it was still dark!
Well done Team Murray! |

Another
excellent 10K at Weston with a good turn-out from the Club. The Stig, aka
Clive Bright managed to complete the whole course wearing his crash helmet
and Liz and Kay took second place in the pairs fancy dress with their
'Christmas Carol' outfits.
Heardy
put on a magnificent day ... when the coach eventually arrived ... and
everyone went home with a smile on their face, apart from Pam who
discovered that someone had taken her bag! Only when she opened the
remaining bag and discovered a white crash helmet was the mystery solved!

Dartmoor
Vale - Sunday 18th October 2009
A
chilly dark Autumn morning awaited the Blues runners getting up at stupid
o-clock (6:30 Departure!!!) to catch the mini bus from the club to Newton
Abbot racecourse. All runners were rewarded for their early start with
some great times and positions in perfect race conditions. A fairly flat
start led on to two hills at about five and six miles respectively. At the
seventh mile all athletes were treated to a pleasant mostly downhill but
slightly undulating second half of the race. With excellent views of the
valley below, the previous climbs were well worth the effort. Gary Suggate
put in an excellent run beating his PB by 3 mins!!! Four of our runners
completed the Marathon with Jimmy Murray finishing first for the blues in
12th place. The 10k was also completed by five club members with Tim Lane
finishing first for us. |

the first running of the South Molton Struggle. There were plenty of
grassy hills and muddy tracks greeting the field to keep any cross country
runner happy. The saucepan shaped course started at the rugby club
circling out into the countryside before heading back down onto the rugby

Brussels
Marathon - Saturday 3rd October 2009
Jimmy
Murray reports on Dave Braunton and his latest adventure:
Well
the weekend began at 7am on Sat. morning, Trish took us both to Tive and
off to London we went, changed trains for euro train and it took us
straight to the centre of Brussels, brilliant!! Dave suggested pub,
didn't need to be asked twice! 3-4 bottles of wine later (including 1
bottle costing £25!!!) we went to the offy and got a better 1 for £2. ha
ha. bonus!!
Next thing we both knew it was 6am - out the door to register, finally got
to the right station after about 2 miles walking in circles, registered
and got the the start. Bang!!! off we went.....18 miles later Dave and I
crossed paths but he was 3 miles ahead of me, think the hangover was clear
but everything else was hurting instead, Dave looked like I felt!! Anyway
7-8 miles later it was all over, another nice medal and t-shirt. Dave with
great run on a tough course 2.58 and I had a mare due to injury 3.29.
After a mile walk to the baggage I was glad to get changed, then pub, then
bearings...yes in that order. £7 a pint????
Dave couldn't get out of his seat, collapsed with shock I think at that
price. Then a few more drinks in a cheaper pub watching Chelsea, a great 3
course meal and it was time to turn in. And I managed to get Dave back to
his room without having to carry him this time, which was great.
Next morning up and off, back to London we went, box ticked. |

or 2 as well, come on we earned it!! All
in all a good trip and one we recommend to all blues."

The
Doone Run - Sunday 20th September 2009
The
Doone run organisers could not have picked a better day for this VERY
TOUGH but beautifully scenic event, held in and around the picturesque
villages of Lynton and Lynmouth. The trails and roads were dry and mostly
under woodland which provided a brief and welcome rest bite from the
unseasonably pleasant sunshine. The clear day meant fantastic views across
valleys and coastline taking most runners minds off the mountain like
climbs. I'm sure everyone that took part would agree this race was tough
but enjoyable, I will certainly be back next year! From a club point of
view we had three runners in the top 20 with an outstanding performance
from Martin Colwill finishing in 2nd place with a time of 1:14:14.
Bideford men unfortunately lost out on the team prize this year coming in
2nd place to our rivals North Devon road runners.

open water swim set in the Copperhouse (salt water) Pool. This
is a mass water start, but non tidal and without surf. Safety boat cover

Swiss
Alpine Marathon K42 - Sun. 26th July 2009
Report
from Jimmy Murray - Got back from Switzerland today, what a killer of
a race, a million times worse than we expected, Daves name was mud the
whole way round, 1st 5 miles like running up High St. through pine
forests, lovely..........then the s**t started!! next 2 miles got muddier
and steeper and the the last 3 was crazy!!! Rocks and mud, almost vertical
at times, can't describe just how tough this was, 15.8K (that's less than
10 miles) chip reading 1.57!!! then the downhill on the rocks started, all
I can say is its like walking along westward ho! cliffs and then jumping
off the edge and keep running for 2-3 more miles! |
 |
|
YES!!
Dave's name was mud yet again, I even made up new swear words for him!
eventually we got to the bottom of this valley and it was rutted paths of
mud, slur and peat bogs till about 13 miles, half way time 2.45, ha ha!
then we got to a drink station had a good feed up and started off, then my
EX best mate says "Jim don't look up!" so I did and all I could
see was ant like trail side to side up a rutted rocky mountain with people
disappearing into the clouds, snow top cliff edges etc. "Thanks
Dave" I replied!! if you believe that comment you will believe
anything. anyway onwards and upwards we went, was really quite warm till
the clouds then hail, then sun again, it was weird, head was killing due
to the altitude about 3400 metres by then, across snow filled ridges, they
were slippery, so scary, one slip had you back down 3-400meters only to
have to get up it again. eventually we reached the top and over, oh thank
god!!!...... but no, downhill was far worse as your running quicker only
watching where to put your feet then bang!! before I knew it face down -
cuts down the arm/legs, ribs hurting, but just get up and get to the
finish Jim I told myself!! 2 mins later BANG AGAIN! more blood and
everything just hurt more! carried on but at this point I had had enough
of this course. 4-5 miles later through this valley we decided to go for
sub 5 hrs and were pushing about 8 min miles then another hill to run up
finished me, so I walked it and Dave was by then winding me up! his
comment almost threatened his life "come on Jim I am dying for a
fag!" he said, last 2 miles we did in 14 mins, but could I catch him?
just as well I suppose but by the time I did I was so happy to finish I
had forgotten to kill him! 4.56.42. We crossed the line together as
planned.
Jim
tells me he spent three hours in A&E today with a broken toe, bruised
ribs and finger joints, cuts down his legs and arms ... and the worse
sunburn ever!
Dave
and Jimmy finished 231/2 out of 745 'runners' - one guy took 8hrs 24 mins!

Yeo
Mill Yomp, Exmoor - 28th July 2009
Helen
Colwill reports that 3 Bideford runners endured the 10.5 mile off road
race at West Anstey, Exmoor this morning. A challenging hilly course, much
of which was over the Exmoor hills and lanes, even crossing a knee deep
stream at one point. Good results from the Bideford Blues with Martin
Colwill claiming his first and probably his last!!! overall win with a
time of 1hr 12mins. "Still waiting for the smug grin to be wiped off
his face". Other Blues results included Steven Turner (1:22) and Mark

Murray completed his 40th Marathon. He reports - "All went to plan

I was happy with, 4.45.15 a whole 5 mins faster than 2003 .
got to the marathon point in 3.50.34 and felt strong so just kept plodding
away. Today I am the worst I have ever been, stiff as hell! Hills up there
are so steep and all the ups and downs and fighting to keep warm hurt as I
was the idiot in just a vest. Should never underestimate Dartmoor weather,
lesson learnt". |

which took place in baking sunshine. Neil will not
be happy with his time of 4:03:59 but Steve Heard will be even more upset
- while on course for an incredible 2:52 Steve collapsed with heat
exhaustion only half a mile from the finish. Unconscious, he was taken by
ambulance to the first aid tent where he spent longer coming round than he
took to do his fruitless 25 .7 miles. |

Clovelly
Crawler - Sunday 24th May 2009
Eight
intrepid Blues made the annual pilgrimage to take part in this Year's
Clovelly Crawler. Veterans Coxy and Heardy were joined by Rob Floyd, Stu
Philps, Dave Cloke, Jo Bedlar, Linda Eastman and Caroline Ellis. Blue
skies and bright sunshine made this years 13 miler an especially grueling
event resulting in times in excess of 3 hours for several of the runners.
Despite opting for the easier 11 mile route from Bucks Mills, Coxy is
reported to have had some difficulty in walking the next day. I am also
led to believe that rather than run with the men, all three ladies felt
safer running without them but then needed to use their womanly charms to
beg refills for their water bottles along the way! It's been decided that
next years Crawler should be in wet, cool April.

Taunton
marathon/Half Marathon - Sunday 6th April
A
huge contingent from Bideford Blues ventured out of the County today to
take part in the Taunton marathon, Half marathon and fun run. Jimmy Murray
and Rob Flloyd tackled the marathon whilst the rest of us settled for the
Half apart from Mike Gilmore, Patricia Martin & Heather Warner who did
their bit in the fun run. Despite a clear sky and sapping sun most runners
put in good times. Organiser Heardy ensured that everyone arrived at the
event on time and even made sure we all came home too! However there was a
bit in the middle where most of us consumed large quantities of alcohol
(which included an 'on coach' hostess service too). Full results HERE

Marathon
Jimmy
Murray was happy with 3:09 but tells me he wasn't impressed with the

since romans only built straight roads, did Jimmy run for 26.2 miles in a
straight line? |

Fine
weather and a gentle breeze helped to make this years Bideford Half
Marathon a great success. Although a marshalling error resulted in the
race distance being slightly increased, 1000 runners completed the course
and recorded history by taking part in North Devon's biggest ever running
race. All finishers were rewarded with a Brooks technical t-shirt branded

'Nearly'
Full
Moon Run
- Tuesday 10th February
A
dozen intrepid Blues members set out on a rural full moon run on Tuesday
February 10th. The 'Nearly' Full Moon (full moon was actually yesterday)
title took on a new meaning since, despite an almost clear sky, it managed
to remain totally hidden behind cloud for the entire run! Fortunately Liz
Warner had brought a head torch which she got free with frosties so we
managed to find our way home. However Mary Poole still managed to trip
over directly under one of the few street-lights we passed on the route
and Kathryn Guard trod in something 'organic' in her new trainers ...shame

New
Forest Marathon - Sunday 21st September
Martin
Colwill and running mate, Steve Heard ran the New Forest Marathon on
Sunday - Martins report - A lovely warm day met us and we set off
in our now accustomed joined at the hip fashion. All seemed to be going to
plan as we hit halfway on target for our dream sub 3 hr time, a few miles
later and the author of this story had the misfortune of either hitting
his first Wall or some other common runners ailment! All I know is that I
was doubled up will stomach cramp and forced to walk and occasionally jog
the remaining 9 miles. Oh, and my running buddy Steve, without doing any long
distance training, of course went on to complete the course in a terrific
PB of 3 hr 05 mins - makes you sick doesn't it !! I did manage to finish
in the end in 3 hrs 34 mins, not quite what I was looking for but its
still good to finish a big one! When all the aches had eased a little what
was the outcome of our mixed experience? We both can't wait to do it all
again next year of course. The scenery is stunning, the organisation first
class and the support inspiring but most of all we're runners, its what we
love! For anyone who has yet to have a go at a 26 miler, they really are a
great experience! |

Quarryman's
trail race 10K, Bampton - Mon 25th August
Liz
Roberts did a personal worst of 1hr 15 at the Quarryman's trail race on
Sunday ;). The course was very challenging and consisted of a huge hill
at mile 1 to 2 then cross county for miles 3 to 4. The puddles
were massive and cause a few people to slip in!
Loads
of fun, the race was attend by about 100 runners on the day.
The
best thing was the race was sponsored by the local pub.. so a cold beer
was waiting for all the finishers :)

The
Battle
of
Sedgemoor
10k Road Race -
Sunday 24th August 2008
This
race is always popular with Bideford runners and this year was no
exception. We had a good turnout from the club and some impressive
results, including Wayne Stephens coming in second and several personal
best times.
Undoubtedly
though, the highlight of the day was after the race when Frankie, in the
middle of the car park, with a little help from Doreen who was holding his
towel round him to protect his modesty, somehow managed to take off his
shorts and then put both legs through one leg of his underpants, then
expressed surprise when he was unable to walk properly.

Helsinki
Marathon, Finland - August 16th 2008
Jimmy
Murray and Dave Braunton took part in a wet Helsinki marathon, finishing
the hilly course in 3:21:29 & 3:13:30 respectively. James tells me
their performance may have been marred by the 6 or 7 pints they each
consumed the night before ... or possibly the red wine? Anyway, he
thoroughly recommends the race. |

- Thursday 21st February
15 'adventurers' took part in what
turned out to be a No Moon Run when dense cloud cover prevented even a

one fell over. |
