The
event, organised for the second time by blues runner Liz (with a little help from their daughter,
Heather but hardly any from her husband Andy) was a great

Moon Run
- Thursday 21st February
15 'adventurers' took part in what
turned out to be a No Moon Run when dense cloud cover prevented even a

at the end of the race). Nevertheless a good run was had by all ... and no
one fell over. |

| Parliament
Hill, North London |
| NATIONAL
cross country courses don't come much tougher than Parliament Hill in
North London. At the weekend, four Bideford Blues braved the gruelling
glue-like mud of Hampstead Heath. And Kevin Heywood used the South of
England Championships to give a clear indication that he is getting back
to his best. Representing Bristol & West AC, Heywood powered through a
classy field to take sixth place among more than 800 runners. Mark Jenkin
secured 43rd spot on his championship debut while Alec McLaren finished
660th on the testing 9.3 mile course. In the U20 race, Steve Gallienne
relished the chance to add to his rapid progress. Less than a year after
taking up the sport, the 18-year-old finished 15th in some high-quality
company over 8k. |

| Adrian Eric
and Mike take a trip to Bude ... apest! |
|
Eight runners from North
Devon, including three from the Blues, ventured to Hungary for the
Budapest Marathon on September 30. Despite temperatures reaching 28
degrees (and minimal training) Eric Hubber scorched round the
course in 4.41 hours to finish second in the Vet 70 age group. Mike
Mears was first 'Blue' home in 3.09, and Adrian Vanstone followed
in 3.35.
The party was made up by
Dave Wenman, Hilary Mortimer, Emma Gooding & Amanda
Andrews from Torrington, along with Diana Harvey representing North
Devon Road Runners. Everyone in the group (joined by three supporters)
had a fantastic time in one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Their
trip included a four hours walking tour followed by a wine tasting
session on the Friday. But the highlight of their visit was
probably the post race banquet onboard a boat sailing up and down the
river Danube on the Sunday evening! (More photos

minutes. Mark Batchelor of South Molton Strugglers worked his way through
to claim second place, while Hockin held on to claim third and be first in
the O/45 age group. The ladies race went to Catherine Newman of Exmouth
Harriers, who held a 44-second margin over North Devon AC’s Eloise

| Pub Run - 16th August - A
select team of runners set off from The Westleigh Inn for a 5 mile trek
through uncharted territory, including numerous hills and the odd cow pat.

supper on Bideford Quay instead ... delicious! |

| Port of
Dartmouth Royal Regatta |
| Well
done to the Mens Novice Coxed fours! |
|
|
Exeter
Regatta,
Saturday
14th July, 2007
|
|
After
days of rain, everyone packed for a wet day for the short-sprint regatta
on the River Exe at
Exeter
on Saturday for the fourth of this
season’s West of England ARA regattas.
But
wet-weather gear was not required as a dry, hot day ensured ideal
conditions for racing.
In
a tough day of racing with 96 events of heats and finals it was going to
be a long day, and this time the younger rowers put the older, more senior
rowers in the shade.
The
Blues Ladies Junior Under 18 crew of Vicki Bushby, Jessica Lee, Rebecca
Jeffery and Hayley Wilson, with Sophie Pearce as cox, took first place in
their category with a win over local rivals the Reds. |
|
|
Pictured
here are the winning Ladies Junior 18 crew with their trophies.

Bushby and Jessica Lee.
|
|
Not
content with that Hayley and Rebecca combined with Nick Blight and Adam
Kelly to win a very good race by a length to win the Mixed Novice fours as
well.
Pictured, again with their trophies, are the winning Mixed Novice
crew of (left to right) Adam Kelly, Nick Blight, Hayley Wilson, Sophie
Pearce (cox) and Rebecca Jeffery. |
 |
| As
for the seniors that were competing on the day, several missing because of
holiday commitments, the Men’s Senior B crew of Adam Bright, Jon Hare,
Chris Davis and Andrew Wilson, with Hannah Wilson as cox, took a very good
second place against strong opposition.
|
| Wimbleball
Regatta, Saturday 30th June. |
| After
the disappointing results at the previous week’s regatta at Totnes, the
Club along with the rest of WEARA, made the journey to
Exmoor
and
Wimbleball
Lake
for the third regatta of the season. A
wet and blustery day greeted everyone and the first crew from the club to
take to the water where the Men’s Senior C four of Dave Byrnes, Adam
Kelly, Shaun Wilson and Matt Colwill with Chris Daniel as coxswain in his
first regatta.Unfortunately,
not long into the race they experienced boat problems and were forced to
stop rowing, eventually crossing the line in fifth place. Next
on the water were the crew of Sarah-Jane Lee, Jessica Lee, Rebecca Jeffery
and Hayley Wilson, with Sophie Pearce coxswaining, in the Ladies Senior C
fours but they could not keep up with the older and more experienced crews
from
South Devon
and
Cornwall
.
The Men’s Novice
fours crew of Nick Blight, Adam Kelly, Shaun Wilson and Matt Colwill, with
Chris Daniel again coxswaining managed a creditable third place, but this was bettered by the Men’s Senior B four of
Adam Bright, Jon Hare, Chris Davis and Andrew Wilson, with Hannah Wilson
as coxswain, who took second place.
Dave Byrnes again
took to the water, but this time in a sculling boat, in the Men’s Novice
single scull, and along with Colin Pennington sculling in the same
category, both qualified for the final of that event but neither of them
were able to secure a points finish. But
it was different in the Men’s Veteran fours, where Dave - in his fourth
event of the afternoon, in his first regatta - and Colin, along with Neil
Pennington and Nigel Cann were beaten by just a few feet into second
place. The men and
women joined together in the Mixed Senior C fours and the crew of Jessica
Lee, Adam Bright, Shaun Wilson and Sarah-Jane Lee - Hannah Wilson, cox –
came third just two feet in the
front of the other club crew of Vicki Bushby, Adam Kelly, Nick Blight and
Hayley Wilson, with Sophie Pearce as cox. The
Ladies Junior Under 18 crew of Hayley Wilson, Rebecca Jeffery, Jessica Lee
and Vicki Bushby, Sophie Pearce again as coxswain, picked up a third place in their category.

| Plymouth
Regatta –
Saturday
9th June 2007
.
|
| The
first regatta of the new West of England Amateur Rowing Association season,
hosted by Plymouth A.R.C., took place on the River Plym on a glorious sunny day,
but with a slight breeze that picked up a bit later in the day making the water
a little bit more choppy for the later competitors.
|
| With
no Junior rowers competing for the Club on the day it was left to the “elder
statesmen” to show the way.
Colin Pennington showed
the youngsters in his event the way to do it when he took first place in the
Men’s Novice single sculls, winning by a two-feet margin.
Later in the day he
teamed up with younger brother Neil Pennington, Nigel Cann and
Glenn Wilkins from the Reds to register first place in the Men’s
Veteran fours defeating a composite Plymouth/Mayflower crew.
|
| In
the Men’s Senior B fours Adam Bright, Chris Davis, Adam Kelly and Andrew
Wilson, with Hannah Wilson as cox came
third in that category.
Fourth-placed finishes
came from the Men’s Senior C crew of Nick Blight, Matt Colwill, Adam Kelly and
Shaun Wilson with Vicky Bushby coxswaining, and
the only women competitors for the club on the day Sarah-Jane Lee,
Jessica Lee, Becka Jeffery and Hayley Wilson and Sophie Pearce as cox in the
Womens Senior C category. |
