Bideford
Half Marathon - Sunday 7th March 2010
Mark
Jenkin was a worthy winner of the 16th Bideford Half Marathon, finishing
the race in 1:10:59. Near perfect conditions greeted runners from as far
afield as Freiburg in Germany and Atlanta in America whilst a dozen
intrepid Irishmen (and women) journeyed from Lagan Valley, Belfast for the
event.
Pipes
and Drums, Samba bands and Morris Dancers entertained the crowds along the
route and England goal keeper David James was spotted amongst the crowds
of enthusiastic supporters (at 6'8" you couldn't really miss him). |

| North
Devon Road Runners (above) turned out in force once again (above) whilst
our largest entry was from the Womens Running Network (57 runners) with
Teignbridge Trotters (right) in second place (31 runners). Teignbridge
kindly provided two pace men for the event and the 1:45 man came home in
1:44:40... impressive.
Bideford
AAC fielded 50 runners and still managed to fully marshal the course, man
the drinks stations, run the canteen, baggage lorry and start/finish. The
work of our volunteers before during and after the event is much
appreciated. |

28.37, as did James McLaren 29.36, Maurice Cockwill 35.35, Alan Heard
37.14, Mike Gilmore 40.59 and Glen Martin 41.04 (apparently the timekeeper
had a bit of trouble with his timing watch at the start). |

Disney
5K, 1/2 Marathon & Marathon - 8th, 9th & 10th January
A
Murray mix competed in a variety of races at Disney World with Jim running
both the Half Marathon (1:38:30) and Marathon (3:26:57) on consecutive
days. Children Rob & Leonie competed in the 5K, finishing in 32min and
34 minutes (can't believe that Rob didn't wait for his li'l Sis ;)).
Jim
tells us that the Marathon starts at 5.40 in the morning to avoid the heat
of the sun. Unfortunately freak weather conditions meant that it was so
cold that spilt water at the drinks stations was freezing on the ground!
It's also the first marathon that Jim has finished when it was still dark!
Well done Team Murray! |

Another
excellent 10K at Weston with a good turn-out from the Club. The Stig, aka
Clive Bright managed to complete the whole course wearing his crash helmet
and Liz and Kay took second place in the pairs fancy dress with their
'Christmas Carol' outfits.
Heardy
put on a magnificent day ... when the coach eventually arrived ... and
everyone went home with a smile on their face, apart from Pam who
discovered that someone had taken her bag! Only when she opened the
remaining bag and discovered a white crash helmet was the mystery solved!
Gary Suggate was best placed Blue, coming home 25th in a time of 38:08.

Dartmoor
Vale - Sunday 18th October 2009
A
chilly dark Autumn morning awaited the Blues runners getting up at stupid
o-clock (6:30 Departure!!!) to catch the mini bus from the club to Newton
Abbot racecourse. All runners were rewarded for their early start with
some great times and positions in perfect race conditions. A fairly flat
start led on to two hills at about five and six miles respectively. At the
seventh mile all athletes were treated to a pleasant mostly downhill but
slightly undulating second half of the race. With excellent views of the
valley below, the previous climbs were well worth the effort. Gary Suggate
put in an excellent run beating his PB by 3 mins!!! Four of our runners
completed the Marathon with Jimmy Murray finishing first for the blues in
12th place. The 10k was also completed by five club members with Tim Lane
finishing first for us. |

Molton Struggle - 11th October 2009
Constant
rain didn't dampen the spirits of the brave Blue's runners turning out for
the first running of the South Molton Struggle. There were plenty of
grassy hills and muddy tracks greeting the field to keep any cross country
runner happy. The saucepan shaped course started at the rugby club
circling out into the countryside before heading back down onto the rugby
field for the finish.

Brussels
Marathon - Saturday 3rd October 2009
Jimmy
Murray reports on Dave Braunton and his latest adventure:
Well
the weekend began at 7am on Sat. morning, Trish took us both to Tive and
off to London we went, changed trains for euro train and it took us
straight to the centre of Brussels, brilliant!! Dave suggested pub,
didn't need to be asked twice! 3-4 bottles of wine later (including 1
bottle costing £25!!!) we went to the offy and got a better 1 for £2. ha
ha. bonus!!
Next thing we both knew it was 6am - out the door to register, finally got
to the right station after about 2 miles walking in circles, registered
and got the the start. Bang!!! off we went.....18 miles later Dave and I
crossed paths but he was 3 miles ahead of me, think the hangover was clear
but everything else was hurting instead, Dave looked like I felt!! Anyway
7-8 miles later it was all over, another nice medal and t-shirt. Dave with
great run on a tough course 2.58 and I had a mare due to injury 3.29.
After a mile walk to the baggage I was glad to get changed, then pub, then
bearings...yes in that order. £7 a pint????
Dave couldn't get out of his seat, collapsed with shock I think at that
price. Then a few more drinks in a cheaper pub watching Chelsea, a great 3
course meal and it was time to turn in. And I managed to get Dave back to
his room without having to carry him this time, which was great.
Next morning up and off, back to London we went, box ticked. |

roast at the pub next to the finish for all finishers, oh and maybe a pint
or 2 as well, come on we earned it!! All
in all a good trip and one we recommend to all blues."

The
Doone Run - Sunday 20th September 2009
The
Doone run organisers could not have picked a better day for this VERY
TOUGH but beautifully scenic event, held in and around the picturesque
villages of Lynton and Lynmouth. The trails and roads were dry and mostly
under woodland which provided a brief and welcome rest bite from the
unseasonably pleasant sunshine. The clear day meant fantastic views across
valleys and coastline taking most runners minds off the mountain like
climbs. I'm sure everyone that took part would agree this race was tough
but enjoyable, I will certainly be back next year! From a club point of
view we had three runners in the top 20 with an outstanding performance
from Martin Colwill finishing in 2nd place with a time of 1:14:14.
Bideford men unfortunately lost out on the team prize this year coming in
2nd place to our rivals North Devon road runners.

Four
of the first five finishers in today's race were from Bideford AAC. Almost
perfect weather conditions welcomed a record entry although runners were
confronted with a bit of a breeze as they turned for home at Yelland. Our
own Kevin Heywood put in a brilliant performance to finish first in a
blistering time of 50.47! Bideford also won the Senior men prize with

sprint which was a 750m swim 22.5 bike and 5k run. The swim: A 750 metre
open water swim set in the Copperhouse (salt water) Pool. This
is a mass water start, but non tidal and without surf. Safety boat cover

one main hill ( Liz counted 3!) to contend with. Run:

station and then back to the finish which is next to the transition area.
It was a grey and wet start to the triathlon. It was a good day for all

Swiss
Alpine Marathon K42 - Sun. 26th July 2009
Report
from Jimmy Murray - Got back from Switzerland today, what a killer of
a race, a million times worse than we expected, Daves name was mud the
whole way round, 1st 5 miles like running up High St. through pine
forests, lovely..........then the s**t started!! next 2 miles got muddier
and steeper and the the last 3 was crazy!!! Rocks and mud, almost vertical
at times, can't describe just how tough this was, 15.8K (that's less than
10 miles) chip reading 1.57!!! then the downhill on the rocks started, all
I can say is its like walking along westward ho! cliffs and then jumping
off the edge and keep running for 2-3 more miles! |
 |
|
YES!!
Dave's name was mud yet again, I even made up new swear words for him!
eventually we got to the bottom of this valley and it was rutted paths of
mud, slur and peat bogs till about 13 miles, half way time 2.45, ha ha!
then we got to a drink station had a good feed up and started off, then my
EX best mate says "Jim don't look up!" so I did and all I could
see was ant like trail side to side up a rutted rocky mountain with people
disappearing into the clouds, snow top cliff edges etc. "Thanks
Dave" I replied!! if you believe that comment you will believe
anything. anyway onwards and upwards we went, was really quite warm till
the clouds then hail, then sun again, it was weird, head was killing due
to the altitude about 3400 metres by then, across snow filled ridges, they
were slippery, so scary, one slip had you back down 3-400meters only to
have to get up it again. eventually we reached the top and over, oh thank
god!!!...... but no, downhill was far worse as your running quicker only
watching where to put your feet then bang!! before I knew it face down -
cuts down the arm/legs, ribs hurting, but just get up and get to the
finish Jim I told myself!! 2 mins later BANG AGAIN! more blood and
everything just hurt more! carried on but at this point I had had enough
of this course. 4-5 miles later through this valley we decided to go for
sub 5 hrs and were pushing about 8 min miles then another hill to run up
finished me, so I walked it and Dave was by then winding me up! his
comment almost threatened his life "come on Jim I am dying for a
fag!" he said, last 2 miles we did in 14 mins, but could I catch him?
just as well I suppose but by the time I did I was so happy to finish I
had forgotten to kill him! 4.56.42. We crossed the line together as
planned.
Jim
tells me he spent three hours in A&E today with a broken toe, bruised
ribs and finger joints, cuts down his legs and arms ... and the worse
sunburn ever!
Dave
and Jimmy finished 231/2 out of 745 'runners' - one guy took 8hrs 24 mins!

Yeo
Mill Yomp, Exmoor - 28th July 2009
Helen
Colwill reports that 3 Bideford runners endured the 10.5 mile off road
race at West Anstey, Exmoor this morning. A challenging hilly course, much
of which was over the Exmoor hills and lanes, even crossing a knee deep
stream at one point. Good results from the Bideford Blues with Martin
Colwill claiming his first and probably his last!!! overall win with a
time of 1hr 12mins. "Still waiting for the smug grin to be wiped off
his face". Other Blues results included Steven Turner (1:22) and Mark

day (1:31:15) but still finished 102nd out of 1348 entries. |

10K - Saturday 13th June 2009

all. Dann Mapp came home in second place, beaten by the same runner that
beat him into second place last year. Sharon White had a good run too,
encouraging Dave Cloak to keep up as best he could. Full Results HERE

Dartmoor
Discovery (32.2 miles) - Saturday 6th June 2009
Jimmy
Murray completed his 40th Marathon. He reports - "All went to plan
except the weather, lashed it down all day long, freezing cold but result
I was happy with, 4.45.15 a whole 5 mins faster than 2003 .
got to the marathon point in 3.50.34 and felt strong so just kept plodding
away. Today I am the worst I have ever been, stiff as hell! Hills up there
are so steep and all the ups and downs and fighting to keep warm hurt as I
was the idiot in just a vest. Should never underestimate Dartmoor weather,
lesson learnt". |

Edinburgh
Marathon - Sunday 31st May 2009
Steve
Heard, Neil
Marke and Martin Colwill travelled to Scotland to take part in this years event
which took place in baking sunshine. Neil will not
be happy with his time of 4:03:59 but Steve Heard will be even more upset
- while on course for an incredible 2:52 Steve collapsed with heat
exhaustion only half a mile from the finish. Unconscious, he was taken by
ambulance to the first aid tent where he spent longer coming round than he
took to do his fruitless 25 .7 miles. |

Clovelly
Crawler - Sunday 24th May 2009
Eight
intrepid Blues made the annual pilgrimage to take part in this Year's
Clovelly Crawler. Veterans Coxy and Heardy were joined by Rob Floyd, Stu
Philps, Dave Cloke, Jo Bedlar, Linda Eastman and Caroline Ellis. Blue
skies and bright sunshine made this years 13 miler an especially grueling
event resulting in times in excess of 3 hours for several of the runners.
Despite opting for the easier 11 mile route from Bucks Mills, Coxy is
reported to have had some difficulty in walking the next day. I am also
led to believe that rather than run with the men, all three ladies felt
safer running without them but then needed to use their womanly charms to
beg refills for their water bottles along the way! It's been decided that
next years Crawler should be in wet, cool April.

Taunton
marathon/Half Marathon - Sunday 6th April
A
huge contingent from Bideford Blues ventured out of the County today to
take part in the Taunton marathon, Half marathon and fun run. Jimmy Murray
and Rob Flloyd tackled the marathon whilst the rest of us settled for the
Half apart from Mike Gilmore, Patricia Martin & Heather Warner who did
their bit in the fun run. Despite a clear sky and sapping sun most runners
put in good times. Organiser Heardy ensured that everyone arrived at the
event on time and even made sure we all came home too! However there was a
bit in the middle where most of us consumed large quantities of alcohol
(which included an 'on coach' hostess service too). Full results HERE

Jimmy
Murray was happy with 3:09 but tells me he wasn't impressed with the

since romans only built straight roads, did Jimmy run for 26.2 miles in a
straight line? |

Fine
weather and a gentle breeze helped to make this years Bideford Half
Marathon a great success. Although a marshalling error resulted in the
race distance being slightly increased, 1000 runners completed the course
and recorded history by taking part in North Devon's biggest ever running
race. All finishers were rewarded with a Brooks technical t-shirt branded

'Nearly'
Full
Moon Run
- Tuesday 10th February
A
dozen intrepid Blues members set out on a rural full moon run on Tuesday
February 10th. The 'Nearly' Full Moon (full moon was actually yesterday)
title took on a new meaning since, despite an almost clear sky, it managed
to remain totally hidden behind cloud for the entire run! Fortunately Liz
Warner had brought a head torch which she got free with frosties so we
managed to find our way home. However Mary Poole still managed to trip
over directly under one of the few street-lights we passed on the route
and Kathryn Guard trod in something 'organic' in her new trainers ...shame

New
Forest Marathon - Sunday 21st September
Martin
Colwill and running mate, Steve Heard ran the New Forest Marathon on
Sunday - Martins report - A lovely warm day met us and we set off
in our now accustomed joined at the hip fashion. All seemed to be going to
plan as we hit halfway on target for our dream sub 3 hr time, a few miles
later and the author of this story had the misfortune of either hitting
his first Wall or some other common runners ailment! All I know is that I
was doubled up will stomach cramp and forced to walk and occasionally jog
the remaining 9 miles. Oh, and my running buddy Steve, without doing any long
distance training, of course went on to complete the course in a terrific
PB of 3 hr 05 mins - makes you sick doesn't it !! I did manage to finish
in the end in 3 hrs 34 mins, not quite what I was looking for but its
still good to finish a big one! When all the aches had eased a little what
was the outcome of our mixed experience? We both can't wait to do it all
again next year of course. The scenery is stunning, the organisation first
class and the support inspiring but most of all we're runners, its what we
love! For anyone who has yet to have a go at a 26 miler, they really are a
great experience! |

Quarryman's
trail race 10K, Bampton - Mon 25th August
Liz
Roberts did a personal worst of 1hr 15 at the Quarryman's trail race on
Sunday ;). The course was very challenging and consisted of a huge hill
at mile 1 to 2 then cross county for miles 3 to 4. The puddles
were massive and cause a few people to slip in!
Loads
of fun, the race was attend by about 100 runners on the day.
The
best thing was the race was sponsored by the local pub.. so a cold beer
was waiting for all the finishers :)

The
Battle
of
Sedgemoor
10k Road Race -
Sunday 24th August 2008
This
race is always popular with Bideford runners and this year was no
exception. We had a good turnout from the club and some impressive
results, including Wayne Stephens coming in second and several personal
best times.
Undoubtedly
though, the highlight of the day was after the race when Frankie, in the
middle of the car park, with a little help from Doreen who was holding his
towel round him to protect his modesty, somehow managed to take off his
shorts and then put both legs through one leg of his underpants, then
expressed surprise when he was unable to walk properly.

Helsinki
Marathon, Finland - August 16th 2008
Jimmy
Murray and Dave Braunton took part in a wet Helsinki marathon, finishing
the hilly course in 3:21:29 & 3:13:30 respectively. James tells me
their performance may have been marred by the 6 or 7 pints they each
consumed the night before ... or possibly the red wine? Anyway, he
thoroughly recommends the race. |
