New Years Day Two
Bridges, Bideford, 01/01/2002
A crisp, dry morning for the annual "run
the hangover off" event. Peter Hockin retained his unbeaten record since
turning veteran by holding off Simon Edney, with last year's victor Andrew Ingle
third. First lady home was, to no-one's surprise, Vicky Rolfe. Only six juniors
ran the two mile course, with Leanne Glover holding off Chloë Bright in the
last half mile. In the team event the teams were closely matched, with the
eventual winners being Andrew Ingle, Dave Bowden, Shaun Wilson and Chloë
Bright.

Westward League
Cross Country, Bideford, 13/01/2002
After all the dry weather this winter, it was
typical that the rain should come when we host our round of the Westward League.
We started off with the Ladies race, where we recorded a remarkable 1-2-3. Also
combined with this was the U/17 Boys where Mark Davies had a superb 3rd. Nice to
see no less than seven U/13 Girls running for us, where Callie, Leanne and Katie
made up the team all recording personal best positions. In the senior men's
race, Peter ran a good race in the wrong footwear to beat Bill, Ricky and Steve
all in the top ten.

Braunton 10,
Braunton, 20/01/2002
This course is tough enough in good
conditions, but with the wind and rain against for the last 3 miles or so, it
was even worse this time. Barry Reynolds of Exeter claimed first prize ahead of
a phalanx of Blues taking places 2-3-4-5. Vicky improved her ladies course
record she set 12 months ago. In fact, we had the first four ladies with new
recruit Maddy , Helen and Vicky R all in the top 20 overall. The race attracted
192 finishers

Mark Davies' fine run was the pick of the
performances in the incessant wind and rain that marked this year's Southerns.
The only complete team we managed to put out was in the U/15 Boys, who finished

Replacing the Luppit Lollop, this was another
typical South West Road Runners production. Wonder why they aren't called the
South West Muddy, Ploughed Field Runners ? Anyway, the promised mud was there in
bucketloads with the weekend rain, making this a very tough event.
